The Harbor at Opelika residents Clegg and Linda Green know a thing or two about new beginnings. The Harbor is just the latest chapter in a life story that stretches across southern towns, football fields, and living rooms filled with family laughter.

Clegg was the youngest of five and the only son, born in a town so small near Roanoke, Alabama, that he still remembers the faces of neighbors he hasn’t seen in sixty years. He grew up under the Friday night lights, playing football for Handley High School—a passion that took him to Auburn University with a scholarship and the sense that the world was wide open.

After Auburn, life’s path led Clegg to three years of service in the Army Security Agency. Then, as fate would have it, a job with IBM brought him to Savannah, Georgia, and straight into the life of Linda—a Savannah native whose warmth and energy drew people in. They married, marked the first chapter of sixty years together, and soon became parents to a son and a daughter.

IBM kept them on the move, but Linda saw each new city as a chance to make a home. She cherished the years spent with their children and found fulfillment in a homemaking career that allowed her to get involved in countless organizations and community circles. Every new place was a fresh adventure; every goodbye was softened by the excitement of the next hello.

When Clegg retired from IBM, he wasn’t quite ready to slow down. Auburn University called him back, this time to work in TSC, where he dipped into different departments and met people from every walk of campus life. Both Clegg and Linda have always loved meeting people, swapping stories, and spending time outdoors, soaking up the sunshine and the simple pleasures of nature.

Now, sixty years of marriage and four grandchildren later, Clegg and Linda are proof that a good story only gets richer with time. If you see them outside, don’t be shy—pull up a chair, enjoy the breeze, and let them tell you about the places they’ve been and the fun they’re still having. We are grateful to have The Greens at The Harbor.

Social connection plays a powerful role in protecting mental and emotional well-being as we age, yet it is often one of the first things to fade when seniors live alone.
